The Future of Enterprise Applications

There is a fundamental revolution taking place in the IT industry with profound implications for software providers. It is the emergence of the internet as the definitive and ubiquitous platform for all type of computing, whether for the consumer or businesses.

The term ‘internet’ is, in this context, being used to include the network, the servers and all the facilities that support the Web. This reflects the way consumers think of the internet. They expect the power of the internet at their fingertips without regard to what technology and applications are involved, where they are located or who provides them.

The consumer response to the latest generation of innovative internet services has been dramatic. Usage has accelerated enormously both in the number of new users and in the adoption of new applications and services. There is hardly any aspect of life – education, work, travel, health, shopping, entertainment, leisure, communicating – where the internet is not involved. And it is this mass response to the internet that is driving the revolution, because of the resulting demand for services of all kinds, the expectations of access anytime and from anywhere, plus the sheer size of the market.
