MICRO FOCUS RELEASES 'LIFT AND SHIFT' LEGACY MIGRATION STRATEGY APPROACH FOR HP PLATFORM TO DRAMATICALLY LOWER IT COSTS AND INCREASE AGILITY
-- Micro Focus 'Lift and Shift' Now Supports Linux and UNIX On HP --
CHICAGO Aug. 17, 2004 -Micro Focus International Ltd. (Micro Focus®), the leading provider of legacy application development and deployment software for contemporary platforms, today announced at HP World 2004 the availability of its 'Lift and Shift' legacy migration strategy for the HP platform. The 'Lift and Shift' approach to legacy migration is a combination of technology from Micro Focus and services from leading systems integrators like BluePhoenix Solutions (NASDAQ: BPHX). Micro Focus Enterprise Server, with its mainframe transaction option, allows customers to take COBOL/CICS applications and move them to the latest HP platforms running UNIX or Intel Linux without the risks or costs associated with rewriting entire mission-critical applications.
"BluePhoenix Solutions and Micro Focus 'Lift and Shift' for mainframe COBOL applications provides our customers with a new low cost, high performance option for migrating to new technology platforms," said Eran Frank, vice president of business development at BluePhoenix Solutions. "Using Micro Focus Enterprise Server, BluePhoenix Solutions, and the power of the latest in hardware technology, we offer customers a powerful, adaptable platform to support and extend their existing applications infrastructure beyond the mainframe."
Micro Focus Enterprise Server underpins the latest release of the 'Lift and Shift' approach, already available for the Windows platform, by enabling the migration and deployment of CICS/COBOL mainframe applications to Linux or UNIX. With the mainframe transaction option in Enterprise Server, Micro Focus and its partners offer the most rapid and lowest-risk way of re-hosting mainframe applications on the HP platform. Once the application has been rehosted, it can be extended more easily and effectively through the use of XML and Web services to a Services Oriented Architecture.
"Global eXchange Services (GXS) is delighted to be working with leading IT modernization companies like BluePhoenix Solutions and Micro Focus to 'Lift and Shift' our critical proprietary billing applications to Intel based processors running Linux from HP," said Marcellous Frye, vice president at GXS. "With the DBMSMigrator technology and services from BluePhoenix Solutions and the Enterprise Server deployment technology from Micro Focus, we expect to see significant cost savings by reducing our reliance on the proprietary mainframe hardware and software in a very short time frame while keeping the core components of our system intact, thereby unlocking the value of our billing applications."
"Micro Focus is committed to helping organizations like GXS unlock the value of their legacy investments through platform migrations," said Tony Hill, chief executive officer at Micro Focus. "By moving mainframe applications to contemporary platforms like Intel Linux and UNIX on HP, enterprises can exploit new hardware technologies and modernize and extend the performance and value of their core systems.".
