Using the Eclipse rich client platform as an integrated development environment (IDE), developers can use an application development environment they are familiar with, which means less training and quicker on-boarding. Eclipse also gives developers access to analysis and productivity tools that discovers errors as they occur – improving your code quality.

We have also enhanced the language to make it even easier to use to build and deploy modern object-oriented applications that deliver greater business agility. Using the same IDE for COBOL and Java means that powerful composite enterprise applications can be built using the latest in modern User Interface technology.

Micro Focus Visual COBOL for Eclipse builds on the experience of the Eclipse option for Server Express and Net Express and Server Express Remote Development Option (RDO) to deliver a single solution for COBOL application development across Linux, UNIX and Windows that’s lower risk, lower cost and more productive for your business.

Remote Development

Traditional approaches for developing enterprise applications to be deployed on Linux or UNIX have required the programmer to reproduce or emulate the Linux or UNIX server environment on their development computer. This is time-consuming and requires complex processes to perform system or integration level testing.

The alternative approach is to use a remote desktop or terminal session to access development tools on the Linux or UNIX server, but limited tool support or network performance can reduce productivity.
