Optimal Trace Enterprise Edition can work standalone without also installing the Enterprise Server component. Using Enterprise Edition standalone, you can also work with local file-based projects, which is generally sufficient to familiarize yourself with Optimal Trace's structured approach to requirements definition. The primary aspects of Optimal Trace that rely on an Optimal Trace Enterprise Server being available are integration with QADirector (to jump start testing), as well as multi-user collaboration and project management capabilities. File-based sample projects can be found under your Optimal Trace installation directory, which is typically located at: \My Documents\Micro Focus\Optimal Trace Enterprise\5.2\EN\demos. Any project created using Optimal Trace Enterprise can easily be uploaded to the central repository once Optimal Trace Enterprise Server is set up.
Optimal Trace Enterprise Server provides a centralized project repository and manages collaboration between multiple Enterprise Edition users. Optimal Trace Enterprise Server supports the following database repositories: SQL Server 2005 and 2008, Oracle 10g Release 2 and 11g Release 1, and MySQL Version 4.1 or 5.0. Full instructions for setting these up are contained in the Enterprise Server help documentation that is part of the install.
