Net Express 5.1 for Eclipse

Eclipse is the most widely used cross-platform development environment in the world. As an open-source project, it builds on the experience of a global community of programmers to deliver a great user experience. Until now, COBOL programmers on Windows, who need to develop in multiple languages or deploy applications to multiple operating platforms, have had to switch tools for each language or platform. Eclipse now provides a rich, integrated and consistent tool set for all development tasks and platforms.

Developer Support

The key activities, performed by all developers multiple times every day, have been the focus of this release. The Eclipse editor has been tuned for COBOL source code: COBOL margins, syntax highlighting and “intelligence” features make it easy to navigate and change the code and understand the impact of any changes. Background parsing of the code while typing ensures accidental errors are avoided. In the standard Eclipse debugger, the COBOL programmer has full access to view and change data items, set breakpoints and reset execution point.

Advanced Features

Remote Debugging: Where applications are being deployed on to  a Micro Focus COBOL server. The developer can attach their Eclipse debugger to the remote server and debug as if the code were running locally.

Interface Mapper: When re-purposing existing COBOL code for deployment as a Web Service or to be consumed by Java code, the fully integrated Interface Mapper makes it easy to extract interface parameters (for example, Linkage Section items) and generate the required wrapping code.

Consolidated Trace File Viewer: The COBOL run time environment provides a standardized trace file tool making it easy for applications to write log files which can later be used to investigate any problems that arise. These log files often become very large, very quickly. They also tend to be quite cryptic as they’re designed for speed of creation or to reduce size rather than be easily readable. The CTF Viewer in Eclipse makes it simple to work with the trace files, providing tools to navigate around the files and add comments for example - a powerful tool when investigating the behavior of production systems.
