Barcode scanner Connection tab
- On the Manage tab, click Barcode Scanners.
- Right-click an existing scanner and click Properties or right-click and click New Barcode Scanner to create a new one.
- Click the Connection tab.
- Process barcodes from file - select if you are reading previously scanned information from a file.
For this option, you would download data from a barcode scanner to a file first and then use Content Manager to read the file.
- Keyboard emulation or keyboard wedge device - select if you are downloading scanned labels through a keyboard Wedge.
This device uses a computer's keyboard buffer.
- Serial Communications - select if you connect the barcode scanner directly to the serial port.
NOTE: For scanners that use the USB port, select the option Keyboard Emulation or keyboard wedge device and set the scanner to use keyboard emulation as per manufacturer's documentation.
- Serial Port - select the serial port
- Baud Rate - select the baud rate
The majority of barcode scanners use 9600 baud.
Data at the baud rate of 9600, 4800, 2400 or 1200 can be received.
- Parity - select the applicable parity.
The majority of barcode scanners use No Parity.

The options are:
- None
- Odd
- Even
- Data Bits - select the applicable number of data bits.
The majority of barcode scanners use 8 data bits.
Transmission in 7 or 8 data bits is supported.
- Stop Bits - select the applicable number of stop bits.
The majority of barcode scanners use 1 stop bit.
One or two stop bits are accepted.
- Flow Control - select the applicable method of flow control.
The majority of barcode scanners use either Xon/Xoff or RTS.
You can use:
- None
NOTE: Setting a barcode scanner Flow Control to None does not work for batch downloads with any barcode scanner.
- Xon/Xoff
- RTS
- Xon/RTS
- None
- Does scanner need acknowledgement character? - some barcode scanners require Content Manager to acknowledge that it received a barcode and must receive instructions to send the next one.
Select if your barcode scanner requires this type of acknowledgement character.
- Portable (batch download) - select if you are going to update your dataset by downloading a batch of scanned labels from a portable barcode scanner
- Stationary (process immediately) - select if the barcode scanner will be connected to your computer during scanning and you want your dataset updated immediately when a barcode label is scanned
- Timeout - set the timeout period so that the scanner dialogue box will close when no Activity has been detected within the period
- Process barcodes from file - select if you are reading previously scanned information from a file.
