Opening a different dataset
Content Manager enables you to set up multiple datasets.
When Content Manager is first installed, the Content Manager administrator sets up the connection to the default dataset.
- On the File menu, click Open Dataset.
The Open Content Manager Dataset dialogue appears with the configured datasets for your profile
- Dataset Name - name of the dataset
- Primary Content Manager Workgroup Server - the server through which you connect to this dataset
- ID - the dataset identifier
- Backup Content Manager Workgroup Server - the server through which you connect if the Workgroup Server is not available.
- Open the default dataset next time you run Content Manager - sets the default dataset that Content Manager will open each time you log in.
- If the dataset you want to connect to is in the list, continue with step 3.
If the dataset you want to connect to is not in the list, click New to manually configure a dataset, or Browse to search for a dataset defined on a Workgroup Server.
New - displays the Configure New Dataset dialogue.
- Dataset Identifier - type in the unique identifier of the dataset to be added.
- Primary Content Manager Workgroup Server - type, or Browse to, the Primary Workgroup Server that the dataset is attached to..
- Backup Content Manager Workgroup Server - type, or Browse to, the Secondary Workgroup Server that the dataset is attached to.
- Authenticate Using - from the drop-down list select this option to enable the compression setting for the RCF connection to the Workgroup Server.
- Enable Transport Level Compression - select this option to enable the compression setting for the RCF connection to the Workgroup Server.
Browse - displays the Add datasets - Choose Machine dialogue.
- Content Manager Workgroup Server - type, or Browse to, the Workgroup Server that the dataset is attached to, then click Next.
The Add datasets - Available Datasets window will display all datasets that are available through the selected Workgroup Server that have not yet been configured in your profile. - Select the dataset(s) to be added, then click Finish. The selected dataset(s) will be added to the Open Content Manager Dataset dialogue.

If the Workgroup Server option Publish available datasets to clients has been disabled, an error will be displayed when a user attempts to Browse to a new dataset. See the Content Manager Enterprise Studio help file - Adding a Workgroup Server page for further details.
- Select the dataset you want to access.
- Properties button - displays the Location of Content Manager Workgroup Server dialogue box - see Dataset properties.
- Default button - sets the default dataset that will be opened whenever the user opens any Content Manager application, for example, Content Manager or Content Manager Desktop
- Remove button - removes a dataset from your profile.
- HTTP Proxy Settings - When a client uses HTTPS to connect to the Workgroup server, it will optionally use a HTTP proxy, if a HTTP proxy has been configured in Internet Explorer. This button opens the Internet Properties dialogue in Internet Explorer, where you can verify and configure HTTP proxy settings.
A dataset message, if set up for the selected dataset, will appear when you select the Workgroup Server.
- Click OK.
Content Manager will open the selected dataset.
If you are switching between different datasets regularly, you can create shortcuts to the datasets using switches once your dataset connections are set up correctly.
Creating a dataset shortcut in the Desktop folder
- Right-click your desktop and on the New menu, click Shortcut
- Click Browse to navigate to TRIM.exe, usually located in C:\Program Files\Content Manager
- Select TRIM.exe and click OK
- The Type the location of the item field displays "C:\Program Files\ Content Manager\TRIM.exe"
- Press End on your keyboard or move your cursor to the end of the text in the field
- Using your keyboard, enter -DXX, where XX represents the database ID of the dataset you want to use this shortcut for.
Please note there is a space before the dash symbol
- Click Next
- In the Select a Title for the Program dialogue, name the shortcut
- Click Finish
You can now double-click the shortcut to open Content Manager and connect to the specified dataset directly.
