Positioning items inside bands
All report sizes and item positions are measured in point size.
How point sizes relate to paper sizes:
- Standard letter - 612 x 792 pts
- Standard A4 page - 595 x 842 pts
- There are 72 points in an inch
- There are approximately 28.8 points in a centimetre
All items in a report band are positioned on the page using horizontal (X) and vertical (Y) coordinates in points.
These coordinates are measured from the following formatting items in each band:
- Band origin - the band origin represents the X, Y coordinates for the beginning of each band.
Items on the active list that appear after the band origin will be printed each time the band is printed.
For example, when you place a Title item under the basic record band origin, the record title will appear each time a new band is printed, and for each record.
- Tab stops - tab stops are formatting elements that appear inside a band and can only be added after the band origin.
Adding a tab stop to the active list resets the origin point for all items that appear after the tab stop on the list.
For example, if a tab stop is located at X = 10 Y = 10 then all items appearing on the active list after the tab stop will start at the tab stop location (X =10 Y = 10) and all coordinates given to them will be relative to the tab stop.
The vertical order after a tab stop is from the tab stop for the first item and from the previous item for any further items.
The horizontal orientation is always measured off the tab stop for all items.
NOTE: As items placed in the report need to be associated with a tab stop and there may be multiple tab stops, a simple method of determining which tab stop you want to drop the item / field into is to select the tab stop, drag a field onto the report and it will be associated with that tab stop.
