Running the BankDemo Application

To run the BankDemo application in the Eclipse IDE, you need to connect to the mainframe that you validated in the previous section.

  1. Right-click your mainframe connection in the Remote Systems pane and choose Connect.

    You are prompted to log on to the mainframe.

  2. Log on with your normal mainframe user ID and password.

    The MVS, JES and USS Explorer entries are displayed in green to indicate you have logged on successfully.

When you have successfully connected to the mainframe, there are two panes of the IDE that enable you to interface with your mainframe:
  • The Remote Systems view, which allows you to filter a view of MVS datasets, USS files and JES output.
  • The Team Developer views, which provide a project-orientated environment for developing mainframe applications on and off the host.

Use these panes when performing the following tasks:

  1. Creating a Filter to View Jobs
    Create a filter that displays all jobs for a particular user ID.
  2. Creating a Filter to View Datasets
    Create a filter that displays all the datasets for a particular user ID.
  3. Creating a Filter to View USS Files
  4. Submitting a Job from the MVS Explorer
    Submit JCL jobs from the MVS Explorer for execution directly on the mainframe.
  5. Opening a Mainframe Application
    Enterprise Developer for z Systems provides a project-based view that allows developers to develop both on and off the mainframe.
  6. Displaying and Editing COBOL Code from the Mainframe
    Within the Team Developer perspective you can now use the full editing capabilities within the Enterprise Developer for z Systems Eclipse IDE to edit mainframe source files.
  7. Checking the Syntax Remotely (COBOL)
    As well as editing files on the mainframe, you can use Enterprise Developer for z Systems to compile applications directly on the mainframe.

  9. Transferring a Mainframe Source to a Local Workspace
    In this final section, you will move source members from the mainframe to your local mainframe development environment running under Windows. This enables you to edit, compile, debug and unit test applications locally without relying on the mainframe.
