2.2 Configure Sessions to use ID Manager to Assign Terminal IDs

ID Manager configures and monitors a pool of resource IDs that can be used to establish a host session. Resource IDs work in place of the required address or identifier for a particular terminal type. This eliminates the need to configure a terminal ID (GPID or LU) for each and every client. You can use ID Manager with 3270 and 5250 terminal emulation sessions.

When a session is configured to use ID Manager, Extra! obtains an ID just before the session connects and then holds on to the ID throughout the session. When the session disconnects, the ID is returned to its pool. A different ID may be used the next time the session connects.

To configure ID Management for an installation

Use the customized installation option to configure the ID Manager server URL and ID selection criteria for a deployment of Extra!. If you skip this step, you'll need to configure these settings in each Extra! 3270 or 5250 session that will use ID Management. (See the following procedure.)

After Extra! is installed, use one of the following procedures to enable ID Management for each session.

To enable ID Management in a session

  1. In Extra!, do one of the following:

    • In a new session, choose File > New and in the wizard, select the host, session, and connection types. When you reach the multi-tabbed screen, click the Advanced tab.

    • In an existing session, choose Options > Settings, and on the left, select Connection, and then click the Advanced tab.

  2. On the Advanced tab, select the check box Use ID Management.

  3. If ID Management wasn't configured for the installation, configure it for the session:

    1. Click Configure ID Management.

    2. Keep Use Reflection ID Management Server selected.

    3. Enter the URL for ID Manager in the box, as in the following example:

      http[s]://<server_name>[:port]/rwebidm

where rwebidm is typically case sensitive, but server_name is not. If you use the default ports (80 for http and 443 for https), the colon and port number are not required. Ask your system administrator to provide you with the URL for the ID Management Server.

    4. Under Obtain ID using, select only those attributes required by the server. If you select Pool name, enter the name of the ID pool.

    5. Click Test to verify that an ID can be obtained from the ID server with the current settings.

    6. Click OK to save your changes.

  4. Complete the session creation.
