You can upgrade IDOL components individually, without needing to reindex or export your data. This section describes the steps to take to upgrade a component, and recommendations.
Micro Focus recommends that you always back up your data before you upgrade a component.
In general, it is always possible to upgrade a component from an earlier version. However, it is not always possible to downgrade a component by the same process.
To upgrade a component, stop IDOL Server and copy the new executable file over the old file. Make sure that the new file has the same name as the old one. Also ensure that you update any libraries that are included in the release package, such as Community security modules, and IDOL KeyView filters included with the View component.
For some upgrades, the component runs an upgrade process on your data when you restart the server. For more information, refer to the component release notes. If your upgrade skips some versions, check the release notes for all versions between your existing version and the version that you want to upgrade to.
IDOL Server releases sometimes include updates to language data files, such as the sentence breaking libraries and stop lists.
Most sentence breaking library updates do not require you to reindex your data. In this case, you can just copy the new library over the old one, and update the supporting files. However, in some cases where an update changes the tokenization or stemming rules, you might need to reindex. For more information, refer to the release notes.
In most cases, your customized stop list for a particular language is more suited to your business purposes than the updated default stop list. If you do want to use a new version of a stop list, you might need to reindex data, depending on the changes:
If the new stop list contains only additional stop word terms, you do not need to reindex your data. IDOL Server will not index instances of the new stop words in new documents, and it will remove the new stop words from any queries (so it does not match instances of the new stop words in existing documents).
If the new stop list removes existing stop words, you must usually reindex your data, because the existing index does not include any instances of those terms in the existing content. However, if you only want the changes to take effect for new content, you do not need to reindex.
The simplest way to upgrade from IDOL 7.x to IDOL 10.x or later is to index data into a fresh installation of IDOL, whilst also activating any further functionality that is appropriate for your use case.
However, IDOL 10 is also fully compatible with existing installations and indexes, so you do not need to reindex your data as long as you include certain configuration settings before you run the IDOL 10 executable. If you upgrade an existing index by replacing the old executable files with newer ones, you must add the following parameters to your configuration file unless they already exist with a different value:
[Server] RepositoryStorage=False SplitNumbers=True DiskHash=1000000 RefHashes=10000000 IndexFieldCheckSum=True BestTermCaching=True
To upgrade to IDOL 11.x, you must also include the following parameter:
[Server] ParametricMaxPairsPerDocument=104858
You cannot run IDOL 10 or 11 using an IDOL 7.x product license. To obtain a new license, contact Micro Focus support.
For more information about the upgrade process, refer to the IDOL Server 11 Upgrade Technical Note.
For more information about the differences in index format between IDOL 7 and IDOL 11, see Repository Storage Mode.
