Filters

A filter is a named set of configuration options that control what information you display using the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility.

Specifically, you can filter (omit) the following data:

  • Responses that occur in less than a specified amount of time

For example, you might not want to display information about responses that occur in less than 10 milliseconds, as these might not be statistically significant.

  • Responses that occur in more than a specified amount of time

For example, you might not want to display information about responses that occur in more than 5 seconds, as this would not represent normal network traffic patterns.

  • Multiple host responses to a single transmission from the PC

For example, with a scrolling application (such as Demand), a single transmission might cause the host to send 100 buffers, which might be statistically inappropriate. By specifying a maximum number of host responses to monitor (such as 10), you can limit the number of responses that are included in the calculations.

You can also use filters to specify the period of time that you want to view information about. For example, you can view the data that has been collected for the past 7 days, the past 24 hours, or the past 60 minutes.

To specify which filter to use

  1. From the Settings menu, click Filters.

  2. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter to use.

The configuration options associated with that filter appear on the rest of the dialog box.

To use no filter, click <None>.

  3. Click OK.

The name of the selected filter appears in the Current Filter area on the application window.

To create a filter

  1. From the Settings menu, click Filters.

  2. From the Response Time Filters dialog box, click Add.

  3. In the Enter Name Of New Filter text box, type the name to use for the filter.

  4. Click OK from the Add Filter dialog box.

The name of the filter is added to the Available Filters list box and is highlighted.

  5. Specify the desired configuration options for this filter.

  6. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to use and then click OK.

The filter that is selected when you click OK is the filter that will be applied to any information displayed by the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility.

To delete a filter

  1. From the Settings menu, click Filters.

  2. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to delete.

  3. Click Delete.

The name of the filter disappears from the Available Filters list box.

  4. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to use and then click OK.

The filter that is selected when you click OK is the filter that will be applied to any information displayed by the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility.

To specify the minimum response time to monitor

  1. From the Settings menu, click Filters.

  2. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to modify.

  3. In the Min Response Time (Milliseconds) text box, type the minimum number of milliseconds that must occur between a transmission and a response, or between multiple responses, in order for the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility to display the information.

For example, to omit information about any response times less than 10 milliseconds, you would type 10 in this text box.

  4. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to use and then click OK.

The filter that is selected when you click OK is the filter that will be applied to any information displayed by the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility.

To specify the maximum response time to monitor

  1. From the Settings menu, click Filters.

  2. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to modify.

  3. In the Max Response Time (Milliseconds) text box, type the maximum number of milliseconds that can occur between a transmission and a response, or between multiple responses, in order for the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility to display the information.

For example, to omit information about any response times greater than 5 seconds, you would type 5000 in this text box.

  4. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to use and then click OK.

The filter that is selected when you click OK is the filter that will be applied to any information displayed by the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility.

To specify the maximum number of responses per transmit

  1. From the Settings menu, click Filters.

  2. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to modify.

  3. In the Max Responses Per Transmit text box, type the maximum number of host responses that you want to display information about.

For example, with a scrolling application (such as Demand), a single transmission might cause the host to send 100 buffers, which might be statistically inappropriate. By specifying a maximum number of host responses to monitor (such as 10), you can limit the number of responses that are included in the calculations.

  4. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to use and then click OK.

The filter that is selected when you click OK is the filter that will be applied to any information displayed by the InfoConnect Response Time Monitor Utility.

To specify the period to monitor

  1. From the Settings menu, click Filters.

  2. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to modify.

  3. Click the option that indicates the period for which you want to view response time data:

    To view data from

    Click

The past one or more days

    Days

The past one or more hours

    Hours

The past one or more minutes

    Minutes

  4. Type the desired number of days, hours, or minutes in the adjacent text box.

For example, to display the data for the past 7 days, you would click Days and type 7 in the adjacent text box. To display the data for the past 24 hours, you would click Hours and type 24 in the adjacent text box.

  5. From the Available Filters list box, click the filter that you want to use and then click OK.

    To

    Do this

Display data for a particular session

From the Response Time Sessions dialog box, click Browse.
