2.0 What’s New for AWS Quick Start

PlateSpin Migrate updates the AWS Quick Start support to help you quickly and easily deploy PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 server on the AWS Cloud in addition to the existing support for deploying PlateSpin Migrate 2019.11 server on the AWS Cloud. For more information about the Quick Start, see Micro Focus PlateSpin Migrate on AWS.

3.0 What’s New for Migrate Server in Azure Cloud

PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 server image for Azure Global and Azure China are now available in Microsoft Azure Marketplace. This is in addition to the PlateSpin Migrate 2019.11 server image and replication environment for Azure Global and Azure China that are already available in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.

In the Azure Marketplace, search for “PlateSpin”, then select the PlateSpin Migrate and PlateSpin Replication Environment images from Micro Focus.

4.0 What’s New

PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 includes several new features and enhancements.

Many of these improvements were made in direct response to suggestions from our customers. We thank you for your time and valuable input. We hope you continue to help us ensure that our products meet all your needs.

4.1 AWS Migration Enhancements

  • Support for New AWS Instance Types

    PlateSpin Migrate adds support for the following new instances offered by Amazon Web Services since the Migrate 2019.11 release:

    m5n, m5dn, r5n, r5dn

4.2 Source Workload Support Enhancements

  • Support for migration of Windows Server 2019 source workloads

    NOTE:For migration of Windows Server 2019 workloads to AWS cloud, only t2 instances are supported.

  • Enhanced support for the following previously-supported Linux source workloads:

    • Precompiled blkwatch drivers for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.7, Oracle Linux 7.7, Cent OS 7.7 workloads, which were supported in the PlateSpin Migrate 2019.11 release, are now included in the PlateSpin Migrate software. See List of Distributions in the User Guide.

    • Support for conversion of a SLES 12 SP4 BIOS workload with a default LVM-based installation irrespective of whether it has partitions or not.

4.3 Target Platform Support Enhancements

  • Support for Target VMware 6.7 U3 Platforms

    • VMware vCenter 6.7 U3

    • VMware ESXi 6.7 U3

  • Support for migrations to Microsoft Azure-connected Azure Stack:

  • Enhanced the default SCSI adapter selection algorithm for SLES 11 and SLES 12 target workloads:

    • For migrations to ESX 6.0 or later: The default SCSI adapter type for SLES 11 and SLES 12 workloads is set to Paravirtual (PVSCSI).

    • For migrations to ESX 5.5: The default SCSI adapter type for SLES 11 workloads is set to LSI Logic Parallel.

4.4 Installer Enhancements

PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 enhances the Install PlateSpin Migrate Prerequisites script to restart automatically after the Migrate host server is rebooted when prompted by the script. It is therefore no longer required to manually restart the Install PlateSpin Migrate Prerequisites script after the reboot.

4.5 PlateSpin Configuration Settings

  • Ability to Use a Public IP First When Registering the Target Cloud Instance With Migrate Server:

    PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 introduces a new configuration parameter named UsePublicIPForRegistration with a default value of True. This default setting enables PlateSpin Migrate to first use a public IP address to register the target cloud instance with the Migrate server during migration. If the public IP address is not reachable, the connection attempt fails back to using a private IP address, and vice versa.   • Ability to Retain the Source VMware Tools on the Target Workload:

    For workloads configured with the Install VM Tools option, the default behavior of PlateSpin Migrate is to remove the source workload VMware tools and install target workload-specific VMware tools on the target workload. PlateSpin Migrate controls this behavior by using the RetainSourceVMTools parameter that is set to False by default. To enable PlateSpin Migrate to retain the source VMware tools on the target workload, set the value of RetainSourceVMTools to True. 5.0 Migrate API

Version 2019.8 is the latest release version of PlateSpin Migrate API. No API-related changes have been made post 2019.8 release.

6.0 Deprecated Platforms

PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 discontinues support for Microsoft Hyper-V as a supported target platform.

IMPORTANT:Before you upgrade from PlateSpin Migrate 2019.11 to PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2, ensure that you complete planned migrations that involve configurations and functions that will be deprecated in version 2020.2.

7.0 Known Issues

This document lists the known issues specific to the PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 release. For information about known issues from previous releases, see the Previous Releases Release Notes. These issues might still be applicable in this release unless they have been marked as resolved in intervening releases.

7.1 Known Issues for Upgrade

After Upgrade, Web Interface Continues to Display an Asterisk Symbol For Newly-Supported AWS Instances That Were Previously Unsupported

Issue: The PlateSpin Migrate Web Interface displays an asterisk on unsupported AWS instances to indicate experimental support for untested instances available in the release.

PlateSpin Migrate 2019.11 did not include support for AWS instance types such as m5n, m5dn, r5n, r5dn and the PlateSpin Migrate Web Interface displayed the asterisk on all such unsupported AWS instances.

After an upgrade, the Web Interface continues to display an asterisk for such instances when you edit a migration job that is previously configured with an AWS instance type unsupported in PlateSpin Migrate 2019.11 even though the instance type is now supported in PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2. (Bug 1162218)

Workaround: The m5n, m5dn, r5n, r5dn instances are supported in PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2. Do either of the following:

  • Ignore the asterisk symbol for these instances and configure the migration job using these instances.

  • In the Migrate Web Interface, refresh the AWS target to remove the asterisk symbol for the supported instances.

8.0 Resolved Issues

PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 resolves the following previously known issues.

8.1 Managed Name Field Is Empty after Switching Options for Storage Layout and Disabling and Re-Enabling Azure Managed Disks

Issue: On the Configuration page for migrations to Azure, Migrate suggests default names for managed disks in the Managed Name field when Azure Managed Disks is enabled (default). If you switch back and forth between the Storage Layouts and disable and re-enable Azure Managed Disks, the suggested names in the Managed Name fields are no longer available. (Bug 1143724)

Fix: The suggested names in the Managed Name fields are now available even if you switch back and forth between the Storage Layouts and disable and re-enable Azure Managed Disks.

8.2 Invalid DNS Entry Error When Configuring Network Settings

Issue: When you configure network settings for migrations to Microsoft Azure, some source workload DNS configurations might result in empty string values for a connection’s DNS entry. These empty values cause the Azure API to throw an exception, and the migration fails to run. (Bug 1146916)

Fix: Null or empty string values in the DNS entry for a network connection are now filtered.

9.0 Installing or Updating PlateSpin Migrate

PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 provides the Install PlateSpin Migrate Prerequisites PowerShell script to check for and install prerequisite software and apply the appropriate configuration: ASP.NET, IIS, and .NET Framework. See Installing Prerequisite Software in the Installation and Upgrade Guide.

To apply PlateSpin Migrate 2020.2 to your PlateSpin Server, you must have an existing installation of PlateSpin Migrate 2019.11 on a supported Windows platform. See Upgrading Migrate in the Installation and Upgrade Guide.
