Chapter 1: Introduction to Windows GUI

You need to do the tutorials in this book in the order shown by the Tutorials Map.

Graphical User Interfaces

The term "graphical user interface" (GUI), or simply "graphical interface", refers to a user interface using mouse, icons, and windows. When the term was first introduced, it was in contrast to command line interfaces and full-screen character interfaces.

The term "Windows GUI" refers to the GUI provided by the Windows operating system, in contrast to other systems such as those provided by HTML on Web browsers. The term "Windows GUI" is sometimes abbreviated to "GUI".

Net Express supports many of the technologies available for creating Windows GUIs. The main tool provided for this is Dialog System. This part of this Getting Started book contains tutorials on using Dialog System. Net Express also provides other tools for the same purpose, included for backward compatibility or specialized uses. For details on these, see Overview - Creating User Interfaces in the Help.

Other systems can be used to create GUI front-ends to software created in Net Express. The Client Tutorials part of this book includes tutorials on some ways of creating front-ends to services created using Net Express.

Please see your Dialog System book for a detailed description of Dialog System.

For the Dialog System tutorials, start at the next chapter, Creating a Windows GUI Application.
