This document provides sample views of DLC over an 802.2 Token-Ring / Ethernet connection for Windows '95.
The Rumba and Attachmate EXTRA! products requires the Microsoft 32-bit DLC protocol to provide support for an APPC connection over 802.2. There are other possible configuration options using other products acting as gateways to the APPC connection, but this is the most common configuration that will be found in the field at this time.
The DLC driver that was released with Windows '95 is a 16-bit driver. You will need to obtain the 32-bit DLC driver for Windows '95 from Microsoft. This can be done by accessing the Microsoft web site and searching for the file named MSDLC32.EXE. After downloading the file create a diskette and extract the contents by running MSDLC32.EXE. This file is a self-extracting zip file. This diskette can then be used to add a protocol. You will need to have your original Windows '95 CD or diskettes available during the installation as the DLC protocol will require additional operating system support files to be loaded. To do this, follow the steps below.
Select Start from the Taskbar, then Settings, then Control Panel. Once the Control Panel is displayed, select the Network Icon by double-clicking.
Select Add from the Network window by clicking on the Add button.
Select protocol from the Network Component Type Window and click the Add button.
Select Have Disk by clicking on the Have Disk button, you should have the diskette that contains the unzipped contents of the MSDLC32.EXE file in the diskette drive of your computer. You will then see a selection that reads Microsoft 32-bit DLC. Select this protocol to be added and follow the prompts. Windows '95 will require that you have available the original Windows '95 CD or diskettes so that additional support drivers can be loaded. The screen below is from a system that has already had the driver loaded and is presented so that we can illustrate that fact that there will be a Microsoft DLC driver available without loading the MSDLC32.EXE file from diskette. THIS DRIVER WILL NOT WORK WITH ANY OF THE SUPPORTED APPC PRODUCTS AND IS NOT SUPPORTED BY MICRO FOCUS, INC. As you can see below, the 32-bit DLC driver clearly states this in the Network Protocol window and you should verify that this is the DLC stack being used if a customer indicates that they have loaded the DLC drivers and they are still having problems.
After following all of the prompts from Windows '95 and loading the additional support drivers from the Windows '95 distribution disks, you should be prompted to restart Windows '95. You should allow Windows '95 to restart, this allows the new DLC protocol stack that you have installed to become active. ALL ERROR MESSAGES ARE RELEVANT. YOU SHOULD NOT IGNORE ANY ERRORS YOU RECEIVE EITHER IN LOADING THE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FILES FROM WINDOWS '95 OR WHEN RESTARTING THE MACHINE. IF YOU RECEIVE AN ERROR THEN THE STACK IS NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY OR THERE WAS A PROBLEM IN COPYING A FILE. YOU SHOULD TRY REMOVING THE STACK AND REINSTALLING.
