Bringing together her two passions to help reduce our impact on the planet – scuba diving and preserving marine life – Joseiby Hernandez Cedeno, SaaS APM Team Lead, Micro Focus, Costa Rica, recently used her Micro Focus INSPIRE volunteering day to support environmental efforts by taking part in an underwater clean-up campaign off the coast of Costa Rica.
“Preserving our marine life is important to me and so I used my volunteering day to join an extraordinary and exciting underwater clean-up campaign led by different non-profit organizations, such as Green Wolf Costa Rica and Marine Conservation Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, diving campaigns to clean our oceans are carried out every three months. This year, due to COVID-19 there has only been one national campaign, which was the one I participated in,” said Joseiby.
Having started underwater diving two years ago, Joseiby has taken part in various clean-up dives to help remove litter from beaches and collect waste from the ocean. Joseiby said common waste found during her dives is fishing rope tangled in the corals, tin cans, glass bottles, plastic – with the occasional old vehicle tyre and household appliance.
"In addition to clean-up campaigns, I also like to participate in activities that promote the conservation and responsible use of marine resources, for example, Mision Tiburon, a charity that promotes research, management and conservation of marine life around the globe, they organize an annual day to count sharks and manta rays near the coast."
