Marking another step in its support of the open source development model, Novell will join Eclipse, an open source initiative dedicated to providing a commercial-quality platform for the creation of highly integrated software development tools. In adopting Eclipse technology, Novell will for the first time provide a common tooling strategy for developers who build on Novell technologies, significantly reducing complexity by providing a unified environment for building, testing and debugging solutions across the entire Novell technology portfolio. Novell's membership in Eclipse will reinforce Novell's commitment to the developer community and contribute to driving development on Linux in that community.

Founded in 2001, Eclipse brings together leading industry vendors, including IBM, Borland, Red Hat and others, to develop and promote specifications for high-quality open source software development tools. The Eclipse developer community goal is to create products that are interoperable, based on plug-in technology and a common platform. Eclipse-based tools support a large number of development languages, prepare applications for deployment platforms ranging from embedded devices to large servers and middleware, and are available in multiple languages, ensuring global applicability. By sharing core integration technology, Novell and other vendors who build on the Eclipse platform can concentrate on their areas of software expertise, creating new value-added solutions for customers.

The extensible nature of the Eclipse Platform enables Novell to provide a common tooling environment regardless of programming language, development framework or operating system. Developers wishing to build solutions using Novell's exteNd™ technology (J2EE*) or open source Mono technology will find a common home in Eclipse whether the target platform is Linux, Windows* or NetWare®.
