Novell Validates Mixed Source Solution Stack

First offering under Novell's Validated Configuration Program to speed

deployment of powerful Linux-based applications

31 May 2005

Novell today announced a powerful application stack comprised of software from Novell, JBoss and Oracle and servers from HP. This is the first offering under Novell's recently launched Validated Configuration Program, which is designed to reduce the risks for customers deploying integrated, multi-application solution stacks on Linux*. As a result, customers can deploy this newly validated configuration with confidence, and with the knowledge it has been tested and developed using Novell's proven best practices.

“Customers need to know that they'll be able to deploy their Linux-based applications without any disruption to their business,” said David Patrick, vice president and general manager, Linux, Open Source Platforms and Services for Novell. “By validating this leading-edge stack, Novell allows customers to save time and money in modeling and pilot testing, as well as gives them peace of mind that the solution will work as promised .”

With this solution stack, Novell and its partners recognize that customers desire the flexibility to safely and securely mix open source applications with other commercial products to create the best solution for their environment. Under the Novell® Validated Configuration Program, Novell and its partners will integrate and test all stack components with one another to ensure enterprise-class performance, document best practices for deployment, and develop recommended configurations.

"Customers today are more comfortable deploying integrated application and database software combinations with Linux," said Martin Fink, vice president and general manager of open source and Linux, HP. "HP has already seen considerable success with its own HP Linux Reference Architecture offerings. By collaborating with Novell on its Validated Configuration program, both companies will be better equipped to deliver fully tested, optimized solution stacks for Linux and open source."

“JBoss is committed to making Professional Open Source a safe and reliable choice for enterprise customers,” said Bob Bickel, vice president of strategy and corporate development, JBoss, Inc. “The combination of open source and commercial products in this important validated stack from Novell reflects the reality of the market today: to drive enterprise adoption of open source, vendors must work together to provide a successful path to open source implementations.”

This mixed source validated configuration consists of:

  • SUSE™ LINUX Enterprise Server 9 – Novell's flagship Linux operating system, with industry leading security and performance capabilities.
  • Jboss* Application Server 4.0– The leading open source, enterprise-class J2EE* platform for e-business applications.
  • HP* BladeSystem servers – HP BladeSystem BL 20p and BL30p server blades combine the simplicity and efficiency of blade design and the low cost of industry standards with enterprise management tools to create an ideal platform for open source and Linux solutions.
  • Oracle* Database and Oracle Real Application Clusters deliver high levels of availability, security and scalability. In conjunction with Oracle Real Application Clusters, Oracle Database can be clustered to deliver a highly reliable infrastructure that can incrementally grow to meet customers’ future needs.

This Novell Validated Configuration is the first in a series of validated configurations from Novell, HP and Oracle that will provides customers with flexibility to implement a mixed source stack within their current environments.

Availability

Validated configuration data, which contains performance testing, recommended configuration information, and best practices for deployment, will be available from Novell in June 2005. Hardware and software components of the stack are expected to be available through Novell and HP in the third quarter of 2005.
