Dell, Novell Make It Easy to Manage Linux in the Enterprise

Novell ZENworks 7 Linux Management – Dell Edition helps customers reduce the cost and complexity of managing Linux systems

20 March 2006

Dell and Novell have developed one of the most comprehensive tools ever for Dell customers to centrally manage Linux* deployments across the enterprise. Novell® ZENworks® 7 Linux Management – Dell™ Edition, an exclusive offering, delivers a wide range of integrated hardware and software management capabilities for Dell PowerEdge™ servers running Linux.

Expected to be available in April, Novell ZENworks 7 Linux Management – Dell Edition allows customers to deploy, manage and maintain hardware, operating systems and applications from a single, intuitive console. In response to customer requirements, this joint effort is designed to simplify Linux environments by consolidating and automating the management of diverse IT resources, eliminating effort, controlling costs, reducing training requirements and optimizing performance.

"The use of sophisticated management tools, such as Novell ZENworks 7 Linux Management – Dell Edition, can dramatically reduce the time it takes IT staffs to deploy, configure, maintain and upgrade operating systems and application portfolios," said Fred Broussard, IDC research manager. "With staff costs ranking as the single largest element in total-cost-of-ownership models, investments in automating systems management can have a dramatic impact in lowering costs. By managing their Linux environments more effectively, customers can avoid manual processes and simplify complex, time-consuming tasks."

Dell's unique approach to systems management enables collaboration with partners to develop high-performance products that integrate software and hardware management using OpenManage toolkits. Deployment and partner development toolkits from Dell and Novell's management tool deliver a productive way to automate mundane, repetitive and error-prone tasks with centralized and remote control, imaging and inventory features.

Novell ZENworks 7 Linux Management – Dell Edition further simplifies Linux systems management by supporting both Red Hat Enterprise* Linux and Novell SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server environments and applications.

"Dell continues to execute its OpenManage strategy of delivering standards-based management tools that help simplify IT operations," said Paul Gottsegen, vice president, Dell product group. "The result of Dell and Novell's collaborative effort is a consolidated Linux management offering that helps customers reduce cost and complexity."

Jeff Jaffe, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Novell, said, "Working closely with Dell, we are excited to offer one of the first comprehensive integrated systems management tools for Linux. Together, we enable even broader Linux adoption in the enterprise by providing key manageability enhancements. As Dell's premiere offering for integrated Linux management solutions, ZENworks helps customers better manage the complete lifecycle of their systems and truly take advantage of the power of Linux in the open enterprise."

ZENworks 7 Linux Management – Dell Edition is expected to be available from Dell April 19, for $69 per license. For more information, visit http://www.dell.com/novell.
