Novell Nsure Gives Husky Energy Competitive Edge with Streamlined Identity Management

9 September 2004

As one of Canada's largest petroleum companies with employees spread throughout regional offices and remote locations, Husky Energy needed a way to streamline the management of identity information stored in multiple applications. Also, as nearly 2,000 contractors come and go each year on a seasonal or temporary basis, the company needed to provide them immediate access to the resources they required as well as immediately revoke network access when they left the company. Following their search for a solution, Husky Energy decided on a Novell Nsure solution consisting of Novell eDirectory, Novell Nsure Identity Manager and Novell iChain.

"We wanted a secure identity management suite, not a few niche tools," said Mike Campbell, project manager at Husky Energy. "Novell allows us to decentralize the process for managing the employee lifecycle. Our field teams can do much of the work to hire contractors and get them set up with the right resources. We're also eliminating much of the paperwork surrounding the hiring process, making us far more efficient."

Husky Energy relies on the Novell secure identity management solution to manage the Employment Life Cycle from more than 50 field locations and 10 main offices. With Novell Nsure, Husky Energy has streamlined identity management across a dispersed organization, while increasing data quality, employee efficiency and corporate security. An up-to-date global directory has significantly reduced user ID management, freeing up the IT staff for other activities. The company has improved operational efficiency by eliminating 80 percent of the paperwork required when hiring contractors.

Ken Doerksen, manager of Enterprise Applications for Husky Energy, said, "Security is a big issue for us. Our Novell Nsure solution has laid the groundwork for everything we want to accomplish with identity management, including single sign-on. We estimate that the system will pay for itself in about 16 months. We have better workforce management and provisioning processes to run more efficiently. Novell technology enables tangible process improvements, which increases our competitiveness."
