21 January 2004

Novell today announced the availability of Novell® exteNd™ 5, its services-oriented application development suite that helps companies rapidly design and develop Web services to reach new customers, build more effective partnerships and give employees faster access to business resources. This award-winning technology is now more accessible to mainstream IT developers with innovative visual tools and added support for Linux.

Novell exteNd 5 provides drag-and-drop tools that enable enterprise developers to integrate legacy systems and applications using Web services. These services can then be orchestrated into business processes and delivered through dynamic portals with little or no programming. With cross-platform support for a wide range of industry standards and application servers, customers can leverage existing investments and avoid the common rip-and-replace approach.

"Novell exteNd has long had powerful development tools, but with exteNd 5 it is even easier for our system developers to use, which will save us both time and money," said David Daniels, technical architect for IMCO Recycling, an exteNd 5 beta tester. "By using exteNd to build our company intranet, we cut our costs while improving communication and productivity. And with exteNd 5 we look forward to providing an even better experience for our customers and other external users."

What's New in Novell exteNd 5
Novell exteNd 5 introduces a revolutionary approach to rapidly delivering Web services through portals. New features in exteNd 5 include:

  • Visual development tools to create interactive portlets without writing a single line of code.
  • Support for leading industry standards including the W3C XForms 1.0 specification for next-generation Web forms and the Portlet 1.0 specification for interoperability between implementations from different portal vendors.
  • Support for SUSE® LINUX and Red Hat* Linux, adding to the industry's widest platform support for NetWare®, Windows* and Solaris*.
  • Ready-to-use portal with extensive configuration capabilities to enhance the out-of-the-box experience. With the integrated exteNd 5 installer, users can be up and running in a matter of minutes.

Identity-based Web Services
By combining the application development of Novell exteNd with the secure identity management of Novell Nsure™ solutions, organizations can leverage their identity infrastructure to enable access to services with the confidence that the right resources are being delivered to the right people. This allows the delivery of applications and services without compromising security.

"While the industry recognizes the importance of securely delivering Web services, Novell is the only company that can actually deliver a leading application development suite complete with secure identity management," said Chris Stone, Novell vice chairman - Office of the CEO. "Combined with the new visual development tools in exteNd and broad support for standards, rapid development and deployment of Web services is now accessible to enterprises of all sizes."

The synergies of Novell exteNd and Nsure also provide the foundation for a new business solution that provides comprehensive, secure and timely visibility into overall enterprise performance. The Novell exteNd secure enterprise dashboard solution combines portal and integration technology from Novell exteNd with Novell's secure identity management technology and business consulting expertise, as well as market-leading business intelligence products from Hyperion. Additionally, the solution can integrate with virtually any business intelligence, analytics or CRM software a customer may already have in place. The result is a secure, standards-based dashboard solution.
