Novell today announced that Novell® exteNd™ 5, the latest release of its services-oriented application development suite, won the LinuxWorld Product Excellence Award for Best Server Application. Winners were selected as the top product and service innovations and solutions in open computing by a judging panel of industry experts and were announced by IDG World Expo on the opening day of the LinuxWorld Conference& Expo.

In addition to Novell exteNd, three other Novell products were among the award finalists including SUSE® LINUX Openexchange 4.1 for Best Productivity Application, Ximian® Red Carpet Enterprise™ 2 for Best System Administration Tools and Novell Nsure™ secure identity management solutions for Best Security Solution.

"The recognition from the LinuxWorld award judges is a great independent validation of the progress Novell has made in its commitments to support the open source community and provide customers with a wide range of products and support on the Linux platform," said Chris Stone, Novell vice chairman - Office of the CEO. "It also demonstrates that we have made some smart acquisitions to go along with our own product development. As a result, Novell is now the only major vendor to offer a complete stack of enterprise-class Linux solutions from the desktop to the server."

Novell exteNd was also honored at the WOW (World Organization of Webmasters) Iron Chef of Web Services Challenge at Comdex Scandinavia 2004 this week. In the live event where each team competes to build the best Web services application in a limited amount of time, Novell exteNd won the Cool WOW Factor award for the most appealing application.

"The special award for Cool WOW Factor was about which team created the most complete and appealing application," said WSCC (Web Services Competence Center) Coordinator, Lars Hornborg, a member of the judges' panel. "Novell won this award thanks to not only a well-built application but also for the strong integration with its portal software."

Novell exteNd 5 helps companies rapidly design and develop Web services to reach new customers, build more effective partnerships and give employees faster access to business resources. This award-winning technology, which shipped this week, is now more accessible to mainstream IT developers with innovative visual tools and added support for Linux. Its new and visual approach to building applications allows for legacy integration and the creation of interactive portals without writing a single line of code.
