Novell and NCR Offer Linux on NCR POS Platforms

22 May 2006

NCR Corporation and Novell have announced a global agreement to offer Novell® Linux Point of Service on NCR RealPOS™ retail point-of-sale (POS) terminals.

The agreement between Novell and NCR – one of the world's largest store automation solution vendors – makes a secure, reliable software platform and hardware combination available for retailers deploying Linux-based POS solutions. NCR's plans call for offering Novell Linux Point of Service on NCR EasyPoint™ kiosks and NCR FastLane™ self-checkout in the future.

“We want to provide retailers with the ability to implement their software strategy of choice when using our retail-hardened store automation hardware solutions,” said Greg Egan, vice president, Assisted Service Solutions, for NCR's Retail Solutions Division. “Novell Linux Point of Service is optimized for the retail environment, and we believe it provides NCR's retail industry customers the top-performing Linux platform for their store operations.”

Novell Linux Point of Service uses the strengths of enterprise-class Linux* to provide security, savings in the form of affordable licensing and simpler hardware requirements, and end-user innovation – helping retailers speed checkout, respond to customer needs and enhance overall store operations. More than 30 retail industry software vendors support Novell Linux Point of Service today.

“Novell is extremely excited to collaborate with NCR to make Linux solutions available to retailers,” said Roger Levy, Novell vice president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions. “NCR's global reputation and respected brand make this an ideal relationship for Novell as we extend our commitment to provide to retailers top solutions on Linux, from back-end systems to sales terminals. No other vendor offers this kind of solution on Linux, and no other vendor has the extensive backing of top solution providers like NCR that Novell does.”
