French Ministry of Defense Improves Testing and Software Development with Borland

Borland solutions shorten test cycle and optimise software development process for Ministry’s Land Maintenance Information System, SIM@T

Borland, a Micro Focus company (LSE: MCRO.L), has deployed its testing and requirements management solutions for the French Ministry of Defense. The Ministry is using Borland’s Caliber, Silk Central, Silk Test and Silk Performer solutions to shorten the test cycle and optimize the software development process on its Land Maintenance Information System, SIM@T, while measuring the impact of the changes made and ensuring data quality is maintained.

The Ministry of Defense has developed the SIM@T system to ensure the management and monitoring of equipment pools, technical operations, and supply and procurement via an equipment repository. Within a collaborative framework, this system is deployed at 250 sites, with 5000 users responsible for monitoring the maintenance of land-based equipment. The system is revised every five years, module by module.

To quickly test and implement new modules rewritten in Java, the SIM@T system uses a combination of Borland’s Caliber, Silk Central, Silk Test and Silk Performer software. The key benefits of the combined solution include a reduction in testing and development timeframes and a confirmation of the impact of the slightest change, right down to data field level.

They simplify dialog between all developers.”

To improve consistency, user involvement has been extended to the testing, review and validation phases. "We forge a link between the user and the developers from the start of the project to its completion,” continued Captain Guillou. “We start by outlining what we want to do using requirement management plans. Then the user is involved in developing that requirement and will follow it through to its validation, using Silk Central and the Borland software suite.”

Alongside Captain Guillou, an Information Systems Architect and a Data Administrator on the SIM@T team noted the Borland solution delivers better visibility of implementations and consistent control of the data structure. It also helps to identify potential problems related to data quality. Moreover, it optimizes input, thanks to advice and reminders being issued earlier, and allows user documentation and training sessions to be improved.
