Novell Champions Linux Compatibility Standard and Attains LSB 2.0 Certification

16 February 2005

Novell today announced that SUSE® LINUX® Enterprise Server 9 has achieved certification for the current Linux Standards Base (LSB) standard. The LSB standard is designed to provide applications compatibility between Linux distributions and facilitate the wider adoption of Linux platforms for application software developers.

SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server has been in the forefront of support for critical industry standards, and Novell was the first vendor to achieve LSB 2.0 certification for its technical enthusiast product, SUSE LINUX 9.1 already in November 2004 . Availability of standardized solutions assures customers stability and interoperability and will encourage the further adoption of SUSE LINUX in the enterprise.

"We are thrilled to see Novell certify SUSE LINUX to the Linux Standard Base," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Free Standards Group. "As a Platinum member of the FSG, Novell is a great supporter of our efforts to provide a common binary standard for Linux. We look forward to working with Novell on future implementations of the LSB."

Novell supports the mission of the LSB project and intends to provide ongoing support for the LSB standard in its Linux distributions. A dedicated work-group under the aegis of the Free Standards Group (FSG), the Linux Standard Base is aimed at creating a binary standard for interoperability between Linux and applications written to the standard, enabling Linux distributions and Linux-based applications to reach a wider market. LSB was developed through the collaboration of community developers, Linux distribution vendors, independent software vendors (ISVs) and system vendors. The LSB consortium have a deep appreciation of their customers' requirements and support the common standards as an important quality assurance measurement tool that inspires customer confidence.
