GWAVA Encourages Corporate Texting with Reckless Abandon on BlackBerry Smartphones

GWAVA encourages corporate text messages with Blackberry smartphone as a solution for archiving.

10 December 2008

Corporate BlackBerry smartphone users today are exchanging information, business transactions, sales appointments and ultimately generating revenue.

Unfortunately, sales departments, IT departments, information security officers, HR and corporate governance groups have not seen eye-to-eye on how PIN messages, SMS text messages and voice communications factor into a corporate archiving and retention policy. “There are numerous requirements, such as litigation readiness and compliance, which have caused organizations to implement an email archiving solution. These same reasons apply to archiving PIN messages, SMS text messages and phone usage,” says Mitch Lauer, Director of Business Development for GWAVA.

"Further, a high percentage of organizations have told us that they have disabled text message functionalities in spite of real business needs for the technology because they don’t have an archiving and retrieval solution in place. As we present the secure messaging archiving capabilities of Retain to organizations that use the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, they begin to understand they can now provide PIN messaging, SMS text messaging and phone functionality and at the same time address the concerns that prohibited these functions in the first place,” says Lauer.

Today much of the concerns can be mitigated with the release of a new product from GWAVA -- Retain 2 -- for organizations that have deployed a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This release comes at a time when the tide of litigation favors those organizations that have clear archiving, retrieval and information leakage policies in place. As texting and voice become increasingly prevalent, PIN messages, SMS text messages and phone usage must be included. “A corporate archiving policy that does not include all forms of communications data is incomplete. It’s like locking the house but leaving the back door open,” says Lauer.

Retain 2 from GWAVA is easy to install, server based, requires no software on BlackBerry smartphones and can scale to support tens of thousands of users. In addition, features have been added to enhance the experience for auditors and administrators. Some of this new functionality includes conversion of PIN messages, SMS text messages and phone usage data to individual pieces of email that are archived in an organization’s email archive repository; rights management; audit logging; and the ability to view specific messages and mark them as reviewed.
