Monitoring as Code (MaC) is a modern practice getting wider adoption in software development. It helps assure consistency, scalability, repeatability and auditability through standardization and version control.
MaC is part of the Everything-as-code (EaC) or shift-left mindset: In the development cycle that begins with design and coding and ends with releasing software to customers, the monitoring has shifted closer to the beginning of the process.
This white paper describes how you can use Operations Bridge Manager (OBM) and implement MaC for your IT landscape. Based on user input in configuration files (which can be under source code control and part of your DevOps pipeline), new systems and applications will be monitored by OBM. The users that specify what should be monitored do not have to understand OBM – the idea is that all the details of the monitoring tool are hidden from those users so that they can start the required monitoring easily without learning monitoring tool details.
The target audience of this white paper is the IT Operations department responsible for IT monitoring, who wants to implement the MaC approach and enable R&D teams to define the monitoring of their environment themselves.
