Universitätsklinikum Würzburg is a public hospital in Würzburg, Germany. It comprises 19 clinics with 1,433 beds, 5,379 employees, 52,147 inpatients and 200,500 outpatients every year. The Service Center Medical Informatics provides IT services, including central information systems, email servers, and desktop management and support.
Universitätsklinikum Würzburg wanted to standardize and modernize its IT landscape and make its desktop management environment ready for Microsoft Windows 7. The hospital also wanted to standardize its overall IT environment to reduce the number of databases and directory services, and streamline its server landscape for more efficient administration.
A long-term user of Novell (now part of Micro Focus) products for desktop management, Universitätsklinikum Würzburg was looking to update its solution. The Service Center Medical Informatics short listed four competitive solutions and eventually selected ZENworks Configuration Management based on previous positive experience with the company’s solutions and a successful testing period. ZENworks Configuration Management met all requirements regarding compatibility and also offered new features to optimize desktop management and software distribution.
Working with Micro Focus Consulting, the Service Center Medical Informatics implemented ZENworks Configuration Management and integrated it into the existing IT landscape. Four ZENworks Configuration Management servers were installed on blade systems running Microsoft Windows 2008 Server and connected to the central storage infrastructure. The shared database is provided by the hospital-wide standard database solution Microsoft SQL Server, while user authentication services are provided by Microsoft Active Directory technology.
Initially, 4,500 clients were smoothly migrated to the new solution. Half a year later, the number increased to approximately 5,000 clients. In the meantime, Universitätsklinikum Würzburg also set up a pilot project with Windows 7 clients. Universitätsklinikum Würzburg used the migration wizard to port its application bundles for the software distribution to the new version. “The high quality of the migration tools contributed to our decision to opt for Novell and saved us a lot of work and resources,” said Andreas Thiele, Deputy Head of the Systems Team at the Service Center Medical Informatics at Universitätsklinikum Würzburg.
The new system architecture introduced with ZENworks Configuration Management allowed Universitätsklinikum Würzburg to significantly reduce the number of bundles that need to be managed. Configuration information for different target systems and environments can be stored ready for deployment at one location inside bundles.
Micro Focus Consulting assisted Universitätsklinikum Würzburg throughout the entire project. A two-day workshop ensured that IT staff at the Service Center Medical Informatics will be able to effectively manage the systems themselves.
The Service Center Medical Informatics operates a large Micro Focus Identity Manager implementation at Universitätsklinikum. Integrating ZENworks Configuration Management into the identity management solution is already planned to enable better reporting and improved security.
With the new ZENworks solution, Service Center Medical Informatics can easily manage all desktops at Universitätsklinikum Würzburg. The powerful ZENworks Configuration Management client component provides many features which are not found in competing solutions. The Service Center Medical Informatics especially values the advanced user interaction capability of the client component. The solution provides detailed configuration information and offers a great deal of flexibility for provisioning bundles and interacting with users.
The help desk relies on this comprehensive and user-friendly desktop management solution for its daily work. The solution gathers inventory data and provides help desk staff with remote support features to help users solve their problems more efficiently.
With new software bundle and distribution functionality, ZENworks Configuration Management offers increased flexibility and reduced administration time. By integrating advanced configuration data into bundles and using the standard MSI Windows Installer format, the number of bundles needed for every single application can be reduced substantially.
The integrated automated system update has been very well received by the Service Center Medical Informatics team. To install major patches using ZENworks Configuration Management, the administrator simply needs to approve them in the easy-to-use management console.
Setting up a new desktop computer with the ZENworks desktop management solution and a third party-imaging solution is much easier, and with the advanced configuration options, the solution provides all flexibility needed.
