Novell and MySQL AB Expand Partnership for Leading Open Source Database

Novell offers affordable database software and support services

through 'MySQL Network' subscriptions

9 August 2005

Novell and MySQL AB today announced an agreement to deliver enhanced, combined support for key components of the popular open source LAMP infrastructure stack. Under the reseller and joint-support agreement, the only accord of its kind between a Linux* vendor and MySQL AB, Novell will now offer subscriptions to the MySQL Network commercial database service directly to its customers. As a result, customers can now deploy a true enterprise-class open source foundation for their IT infrastructure with confidence.

“As the largest social networking site on the Web, Friendster's 19 million registered users rely on a system that handles over one billion database queries a day,” said Dave Kochbeck, director of technology at Friendster. “We have found MySQL running on SUSETM Linux to be the ideal combination for us. With the availability of MySQL Network direct from Novell, many more customers will now benefit from affordable, enterprise-grade database technology backed by Novell's world-class support team.”

Launched in February, MySQL Network is a comprehensive, attractively-priced subscription offering that provides modern enterprises with everything they need to successfully develop and deploy scale-out database solutions with MySQL. It includes access to certified MySQL® software, updates and upgrades, proactive alerts and advisors, the online MySQL knowledgebase, and full production-level technical support.

With more than 20 years experience as an enterprise software player with worldwide support operations, Novell has both the knowledge and capacity to deliver enterprise-class support to MySQL users. The agreement will enable the acceleration of enterprise adoption of MySQL, already the most popular open source database, with over 6 million active installations worldwide.

“Our database customers have asked us to deliver a fully-tested and supported infrastructure working with top-tier platform providers such as Novell,” said Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL AB. “By integrating MySQL Network with its premier technical support for operating systems and other application software, Novell is broadening its position as a leader in the open source marketplace.”

“MySQL provides a robust, viable alternative to traditional offerings in the market,” said David Patrick, vice president and general manager, Linux, Open Source Platforms and Services at Novell. “By delivering global support for MySQL, Novell can help customers lessen the complexity of working with multiple providers, reducing even further the total cost of ownership for the enterprise.”
