New York City Chooses Novell to Simplify and Unify How New Yorkers Access Government Systems

6 October 2009

Novell today announced the City of New York has turned to Novell for improved integration of the city's identity and security information technology infrastructure.

Using the Novell® Compliance Management Platform, New York City is enhancing the interaction with its customers by providing a single digital identity that can be used to access services across various agencies. As a result, New Yorkers will eventually require only one username and password to access a variety of web-based city services. For example, the digital credentials that parents use to login and to check their child's school grades would be the same as those used to apply for permits to start a new business.

New York City has selected Novell as its enterprise identity solution, leveraging Novell's sophisticated identity and security technologies to make government more accessible, transparent and accountable. They are focusing on critical areas, including tying the disparate city agencies systems together for better collaboration. The next phase of implementation will enable them to deliver added convenience by leveraging a centralized identity and security framework for New Yorkers to access city services.

Novell's scalable, affordable technology solutions can tightly integrate the various technologies and applications essential to delivering a unified system of access for its customers. Novell also offers a robust security monitoring solution that enables the city to reduce security risks and ensure privacy while managing New Yorkers' digital credentials. Further, Novell's out-of-box offerings include a comprehensive set of capabilities that simplify deployment - eliminating hidden and often expensive customization fees and saving taxpayer dollars.

"More than eight million New Yorkers use government services for a variety of daily needs. It is essential that the city's agencies and systems not only operate efficiently but are protected against potential security risks," said Jim Ebzery, senior vice president of Identity and Security Management at Novell. "With Novell, the city can deliver simplicity and security to New Yorkers by providing a single digital identity that provides access to various city agencies."

The Novell Compliance Management Platform combines Novell identity, access and security management products with a set of proven tools that simplify the implementation and management of the solution. The platform integrates identity and access information with security information and event management technology to provide a real-time, holistic view of all network events across an enterprise. This tight integration delivers powerful risk management capabilities which ensure that business policy becomes automated IT practice.
