XDB Link provides a very powerful and easy-to-use method for cooperative processing to access both PC and mainframe data. XDB Link can be used in a variety of ways, depending upon corporate requirements. Listed below are the basic steps to get your application up and running with XDB Link. For more detailed instructions, see the Link Configuration Guide.
To install the client, some sort of client application is required. The client application can be another Micro Focus product, or, it could be an application developed using a Micro Focus interface.
The XDB Server software must be installed, configured, and started. It is the mechanism for transferring information to and from the mainframe, as well as maintaining XDB Server databases. This step assumes that the SNA or TCP/IP communications utility for your operating system has been installed on the XDB Server machine (such as NetWare SAA server). The Gateway installation and configuration procedure is outlined in the Link Configuration Guide
In addition (if not using Global Security), you must use SQLWizard to create user IDs to match those used on the mainframe. See the SQLWizard documentation for specific procedures.
If the host option was purchased, it must be installed and configured. This option is necessary if you want TCP/IP access to DB2 or if you want to use TCP/IP. See the Link Configuration Guide for details on installing the host software.
The host option does not need to be installed for DRDA access to remote locations.
Before the XDB Server can access mainframe locations, you must provide certain information about these locations. This information is registered in the communication database. Use the Gateway Profile utility to register mainframe locations that you want to access.
Use the Bind utility to create default database request modules (DBRM) for each of your DRDA locations. Bind this DBRM on each remote DRDA location you want to access via XDB Link AR. The package created when the DBRM is bound is used by all applications when accessing DRDA data via XDB Link AR.
Embed SQL statements in COBOL, use a Micro Focus application programming interface, or build your ODBC application. Create a program that has remote procedure calls.
Run the program you have created or run an XDB Server database management utility.
