Adding a New Group and Assigning Users

*
Groups provide a method for controlling location, database, and table level access according to GroupID (GROUP NAME). Users with certain system needs can be given the required access by being in a group that has been granted privileges. When you grant an authority or privilege to a GroupID (using the SQL GRANT command), all users who are members of that group will have the privilege assigned to the group.

Instructions for how to create a new group and assign users to it are provided below. (If a group already exists, you also have the option to assign users to the group by using the Add/Modify User dialog box.

To add a new group and assign users:

  1. Click the Groups command from the Admin menu to display the Groups dialog box.
  2. Type a name in the Group Name (GroupID) field. The GroupID can be up to eight characters long and must follow the rules for a short identifier.
  3. If desired, type a comment about the new GroupID or its purpose in the Comments field. You can enter up to 254 characters.
  4. While you are still viewing the Groups dialog box, you can assign users to the group you are now creating by moving their AuthIDs from the User ID list to the Member Of list. AuthIDs remaining on the User ID list will not be members of the group. You can also assign a user to a group from the Add/Modify User dialog box.

To move an AuthID from one list to the other, click its name to highlight it and then click the appropriate arrow button to move it to the other list. Alternatively, double click an AuthID to move it to the other list. Use a double-arrow button to move all AuthIDs to the other list.

To select multiple contiguous names on a list, hold down Shift while clicking on the first and last entry of the desired list of names. To select multiple non-contiguous names, hold down Ctrl while clicking on each name you want to select. When the selected AuthIDs are highlighted, click the appropriate arrow button to move the highlighted AuthIDs to the other list.

  5. Click the Add button to create the group and its assigned members.
  6. Add, delete, or update other groups if desired. When done, click the Close button to exit the Groups dialog box.
