Other Backup Options

Restriction: This topic applies to Windows environments only.

Most commercially available archival utilities can be used to back up locations. When using a backup utility, it is important to keep in mind that you must backup the contents of all directories for the entire location, including storage group paths (if any) and all subdirectories. This last point is important, as the server could have duplicate file names in different directories, which need to be kept separate on the backup device.

Note:
  • Do not attempt to shortcut the process by backing up only the *.tab files. a *.tab file is useless without the index files (*.idx and *.ptr) and other files associated with the tables.
  • If you want to copy tables or views between locations, use Migrate. See the Migrate User's Guide for more information. Do not use an operating system copy command to copy individual tables from one directory to another.
