To create a data file

  1. In Classic Data File Tools, click File > New.
  2. Select Data File; then click OK.
  3. In the Filename field, type the full path to and filename of the new file, or click Browse and use the Save As dialog box to select a directory and specify a filename.
  4. Complete the remaining fields and controls as required. For a description of each field and control, see Create file dialog box.
  5. Click Create.
Note: If you have specified a line sequential, or a fixed-length sequential or relative file, you are prompted to save the file header details you have just entered. If you click Yes, the file details are saved in a profile file in the same directory as the data file, using the same file prefix as the data file, plus a .pro extension. The profile enables you to open a line sequential, or a fixed-length sequential or relative file, without having to specify its details. In other data file organizations, the Data File Editor loads the data file details from its file header.
  6. Add, copy, insert, delete, and edit records as required. See Creating and Editing Data for details.
  7. Click File > Save.
