Running DGS as a Service

Restriction: This topic applies only when the AppMaster Builder AddPack has been installed, and applies only to Windows platforms.

You can run the Distributed Generation Server in the background as a service. When running as a service, DGS relies on configuration information stored in the system registry rather than configuration information stored in AppMaster Builder. This enables you to set up one or more machines as dedicated DGS servers. Once installed and configured, a DGS server automatically starts the DGS service at startup and runs it constantly in the background, where it handles all DGS requests for program and screen generation sent by AppMaster Builder.

To configure a machine as a DGS server, you must have Enterprise Developer and the AppMaster Builder AddPack installed to enable access to the appropriate configuration software, and you must be logged onto the machine with the user ID you want to use when running the DGS service. This ensures that the DGS settings are inserted into the correct HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry hive.
