Open an Enterprise Server Data Set through ESMAC

Before you start, you must ensure that the enterprise server region is running; additionally, if you are connecting to a remote enterprise server region, you must set the CCITCP2 environment variable in your environment to the IP address of the machine on which the region resides, and a Fileshare server must be running within the region.

This process allows you to connect to a catalog on a single enterprise server region; it is similar to the process of opening data sets in earlier versions of Micro Focus Data File Tools in that it takes the same connection details (host/port number).

  1. In the Micro Focus Data File Tools window, select File > Data Explorer, or click Data Explorer icon (Data Explorer).

The Data Explorer opens in the left-hand pane.

  2. Click Down arrow and select Add Connection.

The Data Source Settings dialog box is displayed.

  3. Click the ES Region tab.
  4. In the Enterprise Server Region section, enter the connection details for the region that contains the data set:
    1. In the Host field, type the network name or IP address of the region containing the data set.
    2. In the ESMAC Port field, enter the port number.
Note: To locate the ESMAC port number, view the Listeners page of the region. The port number is displayed after the IP address and colon for the Web Services and J2EE listener (non-SSL connections) or the SSL-enabled listener (SSL connections).
    3. If the connection is via SSL, check Use SSL.

For more information about enabling SSL connections, see the Security section in Preferences.

  5. In the Authentication section, if the region has an external security manager enabled, type the ID, password, and group for a user that has access to the data set you intend to edit. If the region does not have an external security manager enabled, do not enter any details in these fields.
Tip: before you connect to ESMAC, you can test your connection details: click Test.
  6. In the Filter section, to initially filter the data sets that are retrieved, in the DSN Filter field, type a data set name filter (for example: MFIJCL.*.*.DATA).[1]
Note: To further control filter behavior, use Disable Additional Qualifiers. Use this option to make catalog searching and filtering more consistent with the results produced on the mainframe. Check the option to disable the use of additional qualifiers when filtering the catalog results. For example, when checked, a filter of A.B would only return a data set of A.B. This option emulates the effect of disabling the 'Include Additional Qualifiers' option on the mainframe. When unchecked, a filter of A.B would return all data sets starting A.B (as if A.B** had been entered).
  7. Click Apply.

If you are connecting to an unsecured server, an 'Insecure Connection' warning is displayed. See the Use SSL option above to connect securely.

The catalog associated with the enterprise server region is displayed in the Data Explorer, showing the enterprise server regions you have permission to view.

If you only want to display a subset of the data sets in the catalog, click Filter icon(Filter), then in the Filter dialog box, type a data set name filter (for example: MFIJCL.*.*.DATA) and click Confirm.

  8. To open a data set, double-click it from the list displayed underneath the region node.

The Specify Fileshare Name dialog box appears.

  9. If you are opening a data set on a remote enterprise server region, in the Fileshare Server section, check Use Fileshare, type the name of a Fileshare server running on the remote region, and click OK. (If the region is on this machine, you do not need to enter any details: clear Use Fileshare and click OK.)

The Open Data File dialog box appears.

  10. Complete the Open Data File dialog box as you would for any other data file, then use the Data File editor, again, as you would for any other data file.
Note: Structure files must be stored locally; therefore, if you open a remote data set, you must select any required structure file for it each time the data set is opened.
Tip: If you want to remove an existing connection from the Data Explorer, click Settings icon (Settings) to the right of the connection name, and then on the Data Source Settings dialog box, click Delete.
