1.2 Preparing the Installation and Deployment

You can choose a number of approaches for Extra!, depending on your requirements.

1.2.1 Perform a workstation installation on each workstation

Install Extra! directly to a PC hard drive. You might choose this approach if you are installing Extra! on a small number of machines and you do not need to customize the installation. (See Install Extra! on a Workstation.)

1.2.2 Perform a basic deployment

Perform an administrative installation to copy Extra! files to an administrative installation point. This is also referred to as creating an administrative installation image. Then, using deployment tools, you can access these files and create packages that are deployed to workstations. A basic deployment is a good choice when you need to deploy Extra! to a large number of workstations, but do not need to customize the installation.

See the following instructions for performing a basic deployment:

Set up an Environment for Deployment Using Extra! Deployment Tools to create an administrative installation point.

Deploy Extra!, using one of a number of options as shown in Installing Extra!

1.2.3 Perform a customized deployment

There are several ways that you can prepare the Extra! installation to suit your environment prior to end user installation. These include:

  • Changing default values provided in the MSI file for installation options

  • Adding files to the installation

  • Creating a batch file to facilitate installing Extra! from the command-line

  • Advertising the installation or installing through group policy

NOTE:To install Extra! directly, users must have administrative rights. However, you can make Extra! available to restricted users by advertising the installation or through group policy.

Perform an administrative installation to copy Extra! files to an administrative installation point (just as you would for a basic deployment). Then, customize the installation to specify the way it installs, looks, and acts on the end users' computers. Customized deployments can be deployed to any number of workstations.

For more information, refer to the following topics:

  • Preparing an administrative installation shows how to make the Extra! installation available from a network location for later installation by users.

  • Customizing the installation. shows how to create a transform file that provides new default values for installation options and global preferences. With transform files, you can add preconfigured sessions and other files. You can use either the Extra! Customization Installation Wizard (CIW) or the Installation Customization Tool (ICT) to create transforms and custom MSI packages.

  • Installing Extra! shows how to deploy Extra!.

1.2.4 Deploy Centrally managed Sessions

Section 2.0, Deploy with Management and Security Server shows how to create and deploy centrally managed sessions with the Micro Focus Management and Security Server. This server allows you to centrally manage, secure, and monitor users’ access to host connections, and create and deliver sessions that provide additional security, such as SSL/TLS encryption and token passing, to your host connections.
