1.1 Supported Migration Types

PlateSpin Transformation Manager supports the planning and execution workflow for migrations with the following goals: automated, manual (tracking), manual, and decommission. See Table 1-1 for a high-level understanding of each type of migration and related actions.

Migration Actions

Automated

Automated migration requires the deployment of PlateSpin Migration Factory components in your migration environment.

In a PTM project, add workloads and target platforms, then configure the transformation plan for each workload. You can group workloads in waves and batches for planning.

PlateSpin Migrate Connector subscribes to event messages for your Migrate servers.

Automation supports pre-cutover tests and post-cutover tests performed manually or through your custom scripts

PTM controls the migration execution on your PlateSpin Migrate servers, in accordance with the transformation plan and migration preferences.

Migrate Connector detects and synchronizes any changes you make to the configuration from PlateSpin Migrate.

Migrate Connector listens for status events.

PTM displays the status and progresses the workflow as appropriate.

You can also add notes in the Transformation History.

Manual (Tracking)

Tracking external migrations requires the deployment of PlateSpin Migration Factory components in your migration environment.

In PlateSpin Migrate, add workloads and target platforms, then configure the migration job for each workload.

In PTM, add workloads to the PTM project to initiate tracking by PTM. You can group workloads in waves and batches for planning. After tracking begins, PTM disables some planning options in the Workload dialog, displaying information from Migrate instead.

PlateSpin Migrate Connector subscribes to event messages for your Migrate servers, and matches the imported workloads to workloads on the Migrate servers.

The migration specialist controls the migration execution on your PlateSpin Migrate Servers.

Migrate Connector listens for status events for tracked workload migrations.

Migrate Connector detects and synchronizes any changes you make to the configuration from PlateSpin Migrate.

PTM displays the status and information from Migrate. It updates the migration workflow as reported.

PTM supports enhanced tracking for workloads if you add a matching target platform in PTM. PTM displays richer details in the Workload dialog. In the Platform dialog, you can view associations between platform resources and the tracked workload migrations.

You can specify values in the projec’s Custom fields for a tracked workload.

You can also add notes in the Transformation History.

Manual

Deploy and configure PlateSpin Transformation Manager and PlateSpin Migrate Connector in your migration environment.

In a PTM project, add workloads. You can group workloads in waves and batches for planning.

You can add target platforms for reference only. Workloads in Manual mode cannot be assigned to platforms in the Workload dialog.

The migration specialist controls the migration execution manually or through third-party migration tools.

The migration specialist can manually update the migration status and workflow.

You can also add notes in the Transformation History.

Decommission

Deploy and configure PlateSpin Transformation Manager and PlateSpin Migrate Connector in your migration environment.

In a PTM project, add workloads. You can group workloads in waves and batches for planning.

The migration specialist controls the decommission.

The migration specialist can manually update the decommission status and workflow.

You can also add notes in the Transformation History.
