Creating an ActiveData Test Asset

To create a new ActiveData asset:

  1. Choose View > Asset Browser.
  2. Under Asset Types, right-click ActiveData and choose New ActiveData. The ActiveData window opens.
  3. Type a descriptive name for the asset in the Name text box. ActiveData asset names must follow Silk Test Workbench asset naming conventions.
Tip: Giving the ActiveData asset the same name as the ActiveData file used for the asset helps to quickly identify the asset for test use.
  4. You can create a new ActiveData file to contain the data used by the asset or you can select an existing ActiveData file:
    • To create a new ActiveData file in the file system, click External file and then click New.
    • To use the data from an existing ActiveData file, click External file, click Browse, and then select the file. Ensure that the file is closed to make it available.
    • To create a new ActiveData asset in the Silk Test Workbench database, click Internal data and then click New.
    • To store an existing ActiveData file in the Silk Test Workbench database and to use the data from this internal file with the ActiveData asset, click Internal data, click Upload, and then select the file.
    • To copy an existing ActiveData file from the Silk Test Workbench database to the file system, for example to use a program like Excel to edit the file, click Internal data, click Download, and then select the file.
The ActiveData file name displays in the File text box.
  5. Optional: Type a description for the asset into the Description text box. Use the description to indicate the type of file used as the data file, the type of testing being performed by the ActiveData test for which the asset is being created, or the application being tested with the ActiveData test. The description displays in the Asset Browser for any ActiveData assets that include a description.
Note: If an empty data file is required, click Save and Close to save any changes and close the ActiveData setup window.
  6. In the ActiveData window, switch to the Options tab.
  7. Specify the read options for the ActiveData file.
  8. In the ActiveData window, switch to the Details tab.
  9. Edit the data in the ActiveData file.
  10. Click Save or Save Data to save any changes, or click Save and Close to save any changes and to close the ActiveData window. If the data file of the ActiveData asset is external, which means it is stored in the file system and not in the Silk Test Workbench database and you click Save Data, only the data file is saved. The ActiveData asset is not saved in this case.

The new ActiveData asset displays in the Asset Browser.
