XML Syntax Extensions

Your COBOL development system supports the creation of relationships between COBOL data structures and element definitions in XML schemas. Do this using COBOL XML syntax extensions, which allow you to code references to XML structures right into your COBOL definitions. These XML structures are used to input and output information in an XML format.

XML Syntax - CLOSE Statement
The CLOSE statement in XML syntax closes the XML stream and prevents further operation on it unless the file is subsequently reopened using the OPEN statement.
XML Syntax - COUNT IN Clause
XML Syntax - DELETE Statement
The DELETE statement in XML syntax deletes an XML element and all sub-elements from the in-memory representation of an XML document.
XML Syntax - IDENTIFIED BY Clause
The IDENTIFIED BY clause enables you to map an XML data name (tag) to a COBOL data name.
XML Syntax - NAMESPACE clause
The NAMESPACE clause sets or identifies the namespaces that are contained in an XML document.
XML Syntax - PROCESSING-INSTRUCTION Clause
The PROCESSING-INSTRUCTION clause enables you to embed a processing instruction directly into the data associated with an XML tag.
XML Syntax - OPEN Statement
The OPEN statement in XML syntax opens the I/O stream which contains or will contain XML data.
XML Syntax - READ Statement
The READ statement in XML syntax reads an XML document from an I/O stream or retrieves an XML element from the in-memory representation of an XML document.

XML Syntax - XD File Description
The XD file description defines a set of record definitions to receive data in an XML stream. COBOL programs that use XML must specify ORGANIZATION IS XML.
