Secure Communications (SSL) Legal Information

Restriction: This topic applies only when the Enterprise Server feature is enabled.

OpenSSL Acknowledgment

The SSL support provided by the Micro Focus Security Pack is based on OpenSSL.

The OpenSSL project is a collaborative effort to develop a robust, commercial-grade, full-featured, and Open Source toolkit implementing the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL v2/v3) and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1) protocols as well as a full-strength general purpose cryptography library. The project is managed by a worldwide community of volunteers that use the Internet to communicate, plan, and develop the OpenSSL toolkit and its related documentation.

For further information, see the OpenSSL home page at http://www.openssl.org .

Usage and Export

The ability to send messages in an encrypted form is regarded in some parts of the world as being of military value, and therefore is subject in some countries to legal restrictions and export controls.

Important:

Therefore it may be illegal to use or export SSL or PKIs in or to some countries. You must check the legal position in your country.

Restrictions on Algorithms and Key Lengths

Some encryption or hashing algorithms available in OpenSSL are under patent. Micro Focus has, to the best of its knowledge, not included these in the SSL support included with this COBOL system.

The use of some key lengths may be legally restricted in some countries, because longer key lengths give stronger protection, and therefore may be considered of military value.

Important:

We recommend you take the advice of your own legal department, especially regarding conditions in your country, and especially if you will be shipping products of your own incorporating these features.
