Maintaining Character Sets

Character sets provide a means of associating language characters with an 8-bit number to represent those characters in a data file. It is possible that the character set used to represent the data within a COBOL data file is different from the character set used by the ODBC application receiving the data.

The Character Set Maintenance dialog box provides Relativity with a mechanism for translating between the two character sets. However, Relativity must know the character set that is being used within the data file to represent the characters. This character set is initially determined when the FD is imported by setting the Character Set field, shown when Show Advanced Import Options is selected during a COBOL FD import. The character set may then be modified after import.
