Single-tier and Client/Server Data Sources

One of the finer points of using Relativity is the distinction between single-tier and client/server data sources. For the Relativity Designer, a single-tier data source is needed when the COBOL data files reside on the same machine as the Relativity Designer. In this case, the Relativity Data Manager should be installed and the Relativity (*.rcg) driver should be used to create the data source.

However, when the COBOL data files reside on a different machine from the Relativity Designer, the Relativity Data Server must be installed on the machine with the COBOL data files, and the Relativity Data Client must be installed on the machine with the Relativity Designer. During the installation of the 32-bit Relativity Data Client, select a Custom Installation and on the Data Client Installation Type page, select Database Administrator.

Before a client data source is created, the server data source to which it will connect must exist. Start the Relativity Designer and, from the Tools menu, select Relativity Server Admin, and use this utility to create a server data source. After the server data source exists, then a client data source can be created that references the server data source. (See the Relativity Server Admin help file for more details on creating a server data source.)

Note: The server data source needs to be created only once. When the Relativity Data Client is installed on subsequent machines, a Standard Installation can be used from the Installation Type page, which will cause the Server Administrator not to be installed. When a client data source is created on that machine, it will be able to connect to the already existing server data source.
