Setting up a New Data Source

An ODBC data source name is used to refer to the database, indirectly through the Relativity catalog.

To set up a new data source:
  1. Start the Relativity Designer.

If you are prompted to log on to an existing database, click Cancel.

    The Relativity Designer window opens.

  2. On the File menu, click Create New Data Source.

The Create New Data Source dialog box is displayed.

  3. Select the type of data source:
    1. Select one of File Data Source, User Data Source (only available to the current Windows account on this machine), System Data Source (available to all Windows accounts on this machine).
    2. Click Next.
  4. Select the data source driver:
    1. Select the required driver: Relativity Data Manager (32-bit), Relativity Data Manager for ADO (*.rcg), Relativity Client (*.rcg), or Relativity Client for ADO (*.rcg), then click Next.
Note: For use with Relativity Designer, we recommend the Relativity Data Manager (32-bit) or the Relativity Client (*.rcg) drivers.
    2. Click Finish.

The DSN tab of the Relativity dialog box is displayed.

  5. In the Data Source Name field, enter a name for the data source.
  6. In the Description field, enter a description (optional).
  7. If the Micro Focus Relativity Data Manager (32-bit) driver was selected in step 4, in the Catalog section, do one of the following:
    • To use an existing catalog file, click Select Catalog, navigate to an .rcg file, then click Open.
    • To create a new catalog file, click Create Catalog, navigate to its required location, enter a file name, then click Open.
  8. If the Micro Focus Relativity Client driver was selected in step 4, do the following:
    1. If the Server Name field does not contain the name of the data server, click the Servers button, then click New and enter the network name of the data server machine.
    2. In the Server Name field, select the name of the machine on which the data server is running.
    3. In the Server DSN field, select the name of the server data source.
  9. Click OK.
Note: These options are the minimum required to create the data source; for a more comprehensive explanation of all the options on this dialog box, refer to the Relativity Data Manager Help file.

The Open Existing Data Source dialog box is displayed. If necessary, locate the name of the new data source and select it.

  10. Click Connect.
    • If this is a new catalog, it is now open.
    • If this is an existing catalog, and security has been defined, the Database Logon dialog box is displayed. Enter valid logon credentials, then click Login to open the catalog.
